Hi folks,

I will be receiving my new laptop soon and I want to continue playing gw1 on it for the time being til gw2 comes out.

So to make the transition as painless as possible, are there any gw files I personally need to save from my old laptop to install onto the new one??? I have the original cds from each campaign of course as well as the eotn expansion so obviously those will be installed first...but anything else??

specs on the new laptop:
Samsung R780-JT01
intel i5 460 processor @ max 2.53 ghz
8gig max ddr3 memory
ati HD 5470 1 gig dedicated

current, soon to be replaced laptop:
Dell Inspiron 9300
1.6 ghz
2gig ddr2
ati x300 128mb
and a noisy video card fan which i had already replaced once.

I don't plan on playing anything like crysis, just gw2 and/or possibly diablo3 IF it doesn't have the online/offline restrictions that Starcraft 2 has. I was going to get Starcraft 2 until I learned about those restrictions.

Everything about your toons and accomplishments in game are stored on servers. All you need to do is download and install (or from one of your disks) the GW client. Then run it with an "-image" command line option once to get it do download all the client side game content. FYI: the -image can take some time. On a new setup, I'd say maybe over an hour but it largely depends on connection speed, I think.

tldr: you don't need anything from old laptop to continue GW1 right where you left off.

hd5470 wont be able to play gw 2... its a low budget card used in HTPC and Laptops..

I suggest a laptop with either a 5670 or 5770 or higher for GW 2

1 gig vid ram is meaningless you can compare it with your memory more of the same doesn't make your system faster

and nowadays a 9800gt 512mb will handle most games fine

Yeah, i wouldn't expect good performance from the 5470 for GW2, low settings possibly. It will max out GW fine though. The GPU you want in your laptop will also depend on your native resolution if you want to max it out as much as possible: 1080p HD5870 or GTX460M or above, at lower res, the 5730 or 5650 will do depending on the resolution.

Most laptops can't display full hd (1920x1080) 1366x768 is the standard these days just go with a 5650 and you should be fine

hd5870 is overkill.

The simplest thing to do is to backup your entire Guild Wars directory (folder) to an external hard drive or flash drive (you may need more than 4gigs of space) and copy it to the new laptop. If your old laptop runs Vista or 7, you will also want to copy the Guild Wars folder in My Documents.
After copying, use Windows Explorer (or whatever) to navigate to the Guild Wars folder. Double-click on "gw.exe" and GW should set itself up to run on the new computer. If the new laptop has Vista or 7, you will want to copy/move your templates and screenshots folders to My Documents. You can also right-click on gw.exe and select Send To > Desktop to make a desktop icon for GW.
You can run the game and take a screenshot and save a template first, to see where the folders belong.
Doing it this way means there will be no need to install any of the CDs and no need to do an -image.

Good day people.

I just wanted to provide you all with an update on my new laptop.

IT IS quite simply AMAZING!

Now I can experience GW1 the way it was supposed to be -- maxed out on all levels of GPU setting...and truly, I had NO IDEA what I was missing. The game is beautiful!

To make the GW transition to this laptop, all I did was install the games for the 3 campaigns..and that was that. Oh and I also had about 45 minutes of wait time for files to get downloaded once I had logged into the game server itself. I can't tell you how relieved I was because the instructions I received here (....copy this file, that file..) were just too confusing for me.

Anyhow the game works great and the graphics are...omg...like...like....omg!

Regarding GW2, I know that I might not be able to max the GPU settings. I am well aware of that possibility. Furthermore, it will be more realistic to expect more limitations on this GPU the further-out the release date. But that is quite alright for me because I am always behind the curve when games are released anyway (usually about a year after). So it won't bother me at the least because there were a few games I just couldn't play --and shelved-- simply because my dell laptop couldn't handle them (e.g. FEAR, UT2004, half-life2). So naturally, I'll have quite a few things with which to keep myself occupied for the time being.

I think you will be able to keep yourself busy for quite awhile.... glad to hear it's working well for you.
